Roselle Busch, DVM
Dr. Rosie Busch is an Associate Specialist of Cooperative Extension in Sheep and Goat Herd Health and Production at the UC Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine. She received her DVM from UC Davis, joined a rural mixed animal practice in rural California before returning to UC Davis to complete a residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine focusing on livestock. She has years of practical experience working in the Livestock Medicine & Surgery service at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, teaching students and residents. Dr. Busch then went to work for the California Department of Food and Agriculture with a team of scientists developing evidence-based resources for veterinarians and livestock owners on antimicrobial stewardship. As extension veterinarian she is currently collaborating on a number of studies looking at practical approaches to improve youngstock survival, maternal health and longevity, and impact of integration into nontraditional grazing systems.
Lance L. Empey – Diversion Investigator, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)
Lance L. Empey has been employed by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) since 2018. He currently holds the position of Diversion Investigator (DI) in the Salt Lake City District Office. DI Empey conducts investigations involving pharmaceutical controlled substances, listed chemicals, pill presses, and capsule-filling machines. DI Empey often works in tandem with other federal agencies, state governments and regulatory authorities, and law enforcement agencies. DI Empey earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) in Political Science from Brigham Young University – Idaho, and a Master of Arts Degree (MA) in International Relations/Comparative Politics from the University of Utah.

Jennifer Lyons, CVT, LVT, MS, VTS (ECC)
Jennifer Lyons is an Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Technician Specialist at MedVet in Salt Lake City. She attended UC Davis, and has a bachelors and masters degree in animal biology with a focus on genetics and reproduction. After some time in research, including working in labs that pioneered the research for FIP treatment and feline genome mapping, she transitioned into veterinary medicine. She was one of the first CVTs in Utah, and achieved her VTS in 2021. She is a published author, experienced speaker, and maintains a YouTube channel providing free veterinary education. Outside of veterinary medicine she spends her time adventuring with her husband, and being a doting mom to her four cats.

Rafael Paiva, DVM, PhD
Dr. Rafael Paiva is a veterinarian with extensive experience in bovine health, reproduction, and diagnostics. Born in Venezuela, he began his career in 1994 managing his family's water buffalo dairy and beef operation, gaining early hands-on experience in livestock production.
He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1996 from Universidad Centroccidental Lisandro Alvarado. Following graduation, Dr. Paiva established a large animal veterinary practice and diagnostic laboratory, where he oversaw the processing of more than 120,000 tests annually for a wide range of livestock diseases.
Throughout his career, he has worked as a consultant in reproductive management and herd health programs, collaborating with both private industry and government agencies. His expertise includes major bovine diseases such as brucellosis, tuberculosis (TB), foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR), bovine leukemia, and paratuberculosis.
In 2002, he earned the title of Bovine Reproduction Specialist from Universidad del Zulia. Dr. Paiva has contributed to the scientific community through several international publications and research papers.
In 2010, he relocated to the United States to focus on advanced reproductive technologies, including ovum pick-up (OPU) and embryo transfer (ET). He completed his PhD in Reproductive Physiology at Texas A&M University in 2025.
Dr. Paiva currently serves as a Bovine Professional Services Veterinarian at IDEXX Laboratories, where he collaborates with government agencies, academic institutions, and private industry partners. His work focuses on improving reproductive efficiency and supporting disease control and eradication efforts that impact the economic sustainability of the bovine industry.

Peter Welsh, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA
Peter J. Welsh, DVM, MS, is a veterinarian who is Limited to the Practice of Surgery at MedVet Northern Utah, where he has been part of the team since 2025. Dr. Peter Welsh earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from Brigham Young University. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine through the Utah State University / Washington State University Regional Program. He also completed a Master of Science degree in biomedical sciences with a focus in clinical and translational science from Washington State University. Following veterinary school, Dr. Welsh completed a rotating medicine and surgery internship at WestVet Boise. He then completed a Surgery residency through a collaborative program between Washington State University and WestVet Boise. Dr. Welsh has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed studies in veterinary surgery, presented award-winning research at national conferences, and has a strong passion for clinical innovation. His special interests include 3D printing and CAD technology in surgical planning, angular limb deformity, cranial cruciate ligament rupture, fracture and osteotomy biomechanics and repair, laparoscopy, minimally invasive orthopedics, physical rehabilitation, surgical oncology, thoracoscopy, and veterinary surgical research. He also remains actively involved in clinical research to advance patient care. Dr. Welsh is passionate about helping clients preserve and strengthen the bond they share with their pets. While his love of animals originally inspired him to pursue veterinary medicine, his favorite part of the profession today is supporting both pets and their families through the healing process. Outside of the hospital, Dr. Peter Welsh lives by the values of balance, meaningful work, and optimism. He is a former Division I NCAA football player who now enjoys bikejoring, cross-country skiing, fishing, mountain biking, skijoring, snowboarding, and spending time with his wonderful and supportive wife, their children, and their cherished dogs. He’s also always ready for a Star Wars rewatch with a lightsaber in hand.
