Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences

Graduate Programs

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences offers a graduate program that confers the degrees of Master of Biomedical Sciences and Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Sciences. Students will primarily engage in coursework and interdisciplinary basic and clinical research focused on human and animal health and disease. Research areas are determined by individual faculty members and are listed on the VCLS research website.

Guided by mentors, students in the program work on basic, translational, and clinical research projects that include laboratory, clinical and field studies, and learn skills that prepare them for careers as biomedical scientists. Graduates in Biomedical Sciences have a wide variety of employment options in industry, government, and academia. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical scientists is projected to grow 17 percent from 2021-2031, much faster than the average for all occupations in the U.S.

Currently, undergraduate coursework is not available in the College of Veterinary Medicine, but undergraduate students who are interested in engaging in biomedical research are encouraged to visit the VCLS research website. Research opportunities, including a limited number of summer research stipends, are available on a competitive basis to undergraduate students, dependent on funding.

Note
Students who are seeking a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) should see the DVM Admissions program page for more information. The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is a professional degree conferred by the College of Veterinary Medicine, not a graduate degree, which is conferred by the department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences.
