Tuition, Scholarships and Student Financial Services

Making Veterinary Education Affordable

The Utah State University College of Veterinary Medicine (USU CVM) is committed to providing a high-quality veterinary education at one of the most affordable rates in the nation. The cost of attendance includes tuition, fees, and estimated living expenses, which are reviewed annually to ensure accuracy and transparency for our students. While veterinary education is a significant investment, USU CVM actively works to help students manage and reduce their overall costs through a variety of strategies. These include maintaining competitive tuition rates, offering targeted scholarships and financial aid opportunities, supporting paid student employment within the college, and providing access to financial literacy resources. Additionally, USU CVM partners with industry, alumni, and donors to expand scholarship funding, and encourages the use of cost-saving measures such as open educational resources and shared learning tools. Through these combined efforts, USU CVM strives to minimize the financial burden on students while ensuring they receive an exceptional veterinary education.

DVM Cost of Attendance

Veterinary education is an investment in your future. The following information is an estimation of average expenses a full-time student may experience in the veterinary medicine program at USU. No two students are alike, so things like housing and food will vary from student to student depending on their individual needs and circumstances.

  • Housing and food includes things like rent, groceries or meal plans, and basic utilities.
  • Miscellaneous and personal expenses include things like clothing, entertainment, and other living expenses.
  • Transportation includes things like travel between campus, residences, and a student’s place of work as well as basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Amounts deducted upfront from student loans are taken into account when a student receives a financial aid offer.
  • Your individual estimated cost of attendance will be displayed on a webpage that you can access from your financial aid offer email.
  • Your calculated financial need is your cost of attendance minus your FAFSA expected family contribution amount, which allows USU to determine your eligibility for subsidized loans, work-study, etc.

USU is willing to consider modifications to these components for the purpose of determining cost of living for student aid. Daycare, childcare, and private school tuition can also be added to a student's cost of attendance, as can high out-of-pocket medical and dental costs that were recently paid. Students may also appeal for a one-time increase if they need to purchase a computer for their program. Not all increases result in additional direct loan assistance.

CVM Internal Scholarships

At Utah State University (USU), scholarship awarding is governed by established policies and procedures designed to ensure fairness, transparency, and alignment with donor intentions. These processes help maintain equity in access to funding, while also honoring the specific purposes and criteria outlined by scholarship donors.

Last year, the USU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) awarded over $260,000 in scholarships to veterinary students. These awards recognize academic achievement, professional promise, leadership, service, and other criteria set forth by donors and the University.

Scholarship Matching and Application Process

USU and the CVM use ScholarshipUniverse—an online platform that connects students with both internal (USU- and CVM-funded) and external (private or organizational) scholarships. The system uses a matching process based on the student’s profile, ensuring that students are only shown scholarships for which they meet the eligibility requirements.

To be considered for most scholarships, students must:

  1. Complete a ScholarshipUniverse profile by answering a series of eligibility questions.
  2. Submit applications for any scholarships that require additional materials, such as essays, resumes, or letters of recommendation. Some awards are automatically matched based on profile information, while others require the student to actively apply.

Timeline for CVM Scholarship Awards

  • February: The scholarship application period opens for CVM students.
  • April: The CVM Scholarship Committee reviews applications and selects recipients. Award decisions are based on established donor criteria, academic and professional standing, and other relevant factors.
  • Following Academic Year: Scholarship funds are applied directly to the student’s USU account, generally split evenly between the fall and spring semesters unless otherwise specified by the donor.

Additional Notes

  • Students are encouraged to keep their ScholarshipUniverse profile updated throughout the year to be matched with newly added scholarships.
  • Some scholarships may be renewable if students continue to meet eligibility criteria; others are one-time awards.
  • External scholarships awarded through ScholarshipUniverse or other sources may require students to submit verification documents to the Financial Aid Office for funds to be applied.

External Scholarships & Grant Opportunities

GO FAR: Grant Opportunities and Financial Assistance Resources

The College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to helping students offset the cost of their veterinary medical education by providing resources and enhancing awareness of opportunities to fund their education. The Grant Opportunities and Financial Assistance Resources (GO FAR) publication is a list of external scholarships and grants that have been specifically identified for veterinary students. The publication is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all available financial support opportunities that veterinary students have access to, but a quick reference guide to become aware and target appropriate funding sources so that time as a student can be better spent focusing on their educational objectives. The information is updated on a yearly basis in January and June.

Veterinarian Loan Repayment Programs

Utah Department of Agriculture & Food

The Utah Department of Agriculture & Food is accepting applications for the Veterinary Education Loan Repayment Program. If you work 32 hours per week on average in a shortage area for 5 years after the date of application, you could be eligible to receive loan repayment, of up to $100,000.

USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA)

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) will carry out NVMSA by entering into educational loan repayment agreements with veterinarians who agree to provide veterinary services in veterinarian shortage situations for a determined period of time. If you commit to at least three years to providing veterinary services in a designated veterinary shortage area, NIFA may repay up to $25,000 of your student loan debt per year. Loan repayment benefits are limited to payments of the principal and interest on government and commercial loans you received for the attendance at an accredited college of veterinary medicine resulting in a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or the equivalent.
